The yards people remember are sequenced, not stuffed. You walk out of the kitchen into a patio, past a table, toward one hero — water, fire, a court — with everything else supporting that move. This page is the order of operations: live, shade, path, hero, then the extras.

    How you actually live

    Weeknight two people, or Saturday twelve? Kids every afternoon, or mostly adults after dark? The hangout follows the calendar, not the catalog.

    Sun, shade, and the door

    Track afternoon sun and the path from the kitchen. The first 20 feet off the house decide whether the rest of the yard gets used.

  3. 03

    Pick one hero

    Pool or court or kitchen — not all three in year one. Supporting zones (fire, planting, a green) make the hero feel finished.

  4. 04

    Circulation

    A 4–5 foot path that does not cross the game. People carrying plates should never have to dodge a basketball.

Design tips

  • Tip 1

    Draw the evening, not the plan view. Where do you sit at 7 p.m. in July? Start there.

  • Tip 2

    Leave 30% of the yard as planting or open lawn. Full hardscape looks finished in photos and harsh in person.

  • Tip 3

    Light the path and the faces of people, not the trees from below like a car dealership.

  • Tip 4

    If you cannot name the hero in one phrase, you are collecting features. Cut one.
